AGUSTIN LARA
“EL IDOLO DE MEXICO”
Undeniable icon of an era in Mexico’s history when the growth of radio produced the first media phenomena of the 20th century, Agustin Lara was, is and shall always be the obligatory reference point in understanding the creation of popular music. The evening radio show, “La Hora Azul (The Blue Hour)”, rapidly captured the nation’s attention with its musicality and content and its genial and personal interpretations of his hundreds of songs
Born in Mexico City and raised in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, Agustin Lara the musician-poet was, in the decade of the 30s, the precursor that gave Mexican music its foundation and international prestige.
His prolific body of work moves, scandalizes, seduces, and serves as a frame for observing how society lived and found in his songs time for afternoon enjoyment and delight. Wherever the musician-poet found Woman he wrote, fascinated, humble and moved, melodies that remain timeless to this day and still capable of inspiring and touching the senses: Mujer, Te quiero, Noche de Ronda, Piensa en mí, Rival, Santa, María Bonita……
Agustin Lara inspired dialogues with and for everyone with his music. Like a landscape artist, he created melodies exalting cities, areas, and horizons of his beloved Veracruz, and also of Spain, to which he dedicated one of the most beautiful and most famous songs in the world, Granada.
Solamente una vez is the title of one of his most memorable songs, where he describes the essence of love affairs that occur only once in life and remain in our hearts forever. The same is true in the history of a nation. Solamente una vez did talent, emotion, creativity, and genius coincide with that undefinable quality that took inspiration and converted it into a national treasure.
